The system

What it is.

Human Design is a contemporary synthesis that borrows its parts from older systems, the I Ching's sixty-four hexagrams, the chakras, astrology, and the Kabbalah, and arranges them into a single diagram called the BodyGraph. Unlike the other four readings, it is less interested in describing your character and more interested in one practical question: how are you built to make a clean decision, and where do you go wrong when you override that.

It is the newest thing we read, and we keep it deliberately apart from the four. The four mirrors describe who you are from four directions and converge on one portrait. Human Design does something different in kind. It is a practice, a set of instructions for living, so it stands on its own rather than joining the convergence.

The chart is built from two moments: your birth, and a second point about eighty-eight days earlier, which the system treats as the unconscious, bodily layer underneath the conscious self. Those two readings, laid over the nine centres, produce your Type, your Strategy, your Authority and your Profile.

How to read it.

The BodyGraph has four kinds of mark. Once you know these, the whole chart opens up.

A lit centre is defined: a consistent, always-on part of you that you can lean on. Nine centres in all; you have some lit and some open.

A faint centre is open: where you take in and amplify the people and rooms around you. A place of wisdom and flexibility, not a weakness.

A glowing line is a channel: a theme wired all the way through you, joining two centres.

A numbered dot is a gate: one specific trait, lit when your chart activates it. There are sixty-four, one for each hexagram.

The two columns of numbers beside the chart are your Personality (how you consciously experience yourself) and your Design (the unconscious wiring your body runs on). You never have to learn the gate numbers. They are simply the raw material the reading is built from.

  1. I

    Your Type.

    One of five ways your energy is built to operate: Manifestor, Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector or Reflector. It is the difference between being built to start things, to respond to them, or to wait to be invited.

  2. II

    Your Strategy.

    The single habit that makes your Type's life smoother. For a Manifestor it is to inform before acting; for a Generator it is to respond rather than initiate. Get this one thing right and most of the friction drops away.

  3. III

    Your Authority.

    How you are built to know a true yes from a true no, below the level of logic. For some it is a gut response, for some a slow emotional wave, for some a quiet one-time instinct. The cost of deciding the wrong way for you is named plainly.

  4. IV

    Your Profile.

    Two numbers describing how you learn and how you show up to people, from the Investigator who needs solid ground to the Role Model who is watched. It explains a great deal about why you move through life the way you do.

  5. V

    Your defined and open centres.

    Which parts of you are consistent and reliable, and which are open, where you take in and amplify the world. The open centres are where you are most influenced by your environment, and knowing them changes how you choose the rooms you spend time in.

You are a Manifestor, one of the few people wired to start things rather than wait to be picked. The one habit that makes your life smoother is small and specific: tell people what you are about to do before you do it. Not asking, just informing. Your clearest decisions come from a fast, quiet instinct that speaks once, in the moment, and does not repeat itself; if you talk yourself into a long pros-and-cons list, you usually talk over the read that was right. Six of your nine centres are open, which means you absorb and amplify the rooms you are in, so where and with whom you spend your time matters more for you than for most. The sign you are living it well is a feeling of peace. The sign you are off is recurring anger.

How we cast it

The chart is computed with the Swiss Ephemeris, the same high-precision astronomical engine used by professional astrology and Human Design software. Each planet's position at your birth, and at the design moment eighty-eight degrees of solar arc earlier, is mapped to one of the sixty-four gates on the Rave Mandala wheel, and the defined centres, Type, Authority and Profile follow mechanically from there.

We checked our engine against the open reference implementations and the public calculators they are verified against. Our gate wheel, centre map and decision logic match them exactly, with a small margin in our favour: we carry the full set of thirty-six channels where some references carry thirty-four. The mechanics are reproducible. The interpretation, written in plain language by a person, is where the work happens.
